Body Wisdom

Body Wisdom

Life can get pretty overwhelming with competing priorities, yes?

In reality, there are times when we forget about our health and miss the cues our body is trying to communicate to us.

Signals from our body in the form of mild symptoms are ignored or covered up in one way or another. That is until the symptoms become so pronounced that they demand attention!

Is your body asking for attention?

Eventually, the pleadings of our bodies will capture our full focus by making us sick.

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to remind ourselves to pay attention to subtle changes in our health and address them before troubling symptoms began to develop, thus maintaining the highest level of health?

Well, there is a way!

Welcome to Ayurveda!

Ayurveda is a holistic healing system that recognizes our bodies and minds are inextricably connected to nature.

When we function in harmony with nature, our health and lives flourish.

When we ignore the principles of harmony with nature, eventually disease disrupts our natural state of vitality.

Ayur-what?

The word Ayurveda essentially means the science of life. It derives from Sanskrit, an ancient language and is the oldest living system of medicine. Ayurveda has been practiced continuously for perhaps 5,000 years.

Ayurveda, a sister science to Yoga ideally should be used in conjunction with Yoga to promote health.

The Ayurvedic model of health describes elevating the level of well-being so that illness does not have a chance to manifest.

This involves being attuned to your own personal characteristics, aware of the changing patterns in nature and responding accordingly.

Health depends on our ability to digest food, experiences, and emotions.

We also must metabolize food, experiences, and emotions and extract what is good for us, while releasing toxins that do not nourish us.

Replenishment of our energy through rest and sleep and connecting to the rhythms of nature are also essential for optimal wellness.

Ayurveda recommends raising awareness of your body’s natural rhythms too, paying attention to subtle changes, and making adjustments accordingly.

Developing daily and seasonal routines to respond appropriately to your environment will allow you to notice when your body or mind begins to show signs of needing attention.

Further, periodic cleansing and detoxifying your system of toxins routinely collected in daily living ensure that the seeds of illness don’t have an opportunity to take root.

Here’s a little aside…

I learned about Ayurveda, a sister science with yoga and meditation, nearly ten years ago. It has been so exciting to learn about this ancient system of wisdom and longevity.

Finally, the owner’s manual for life!

The more I learned, the deeper I wanted to go and the more the desire to share what I was learning with others grew inside me.

I ran into a bit of a roadblock when I started talking to people about what I had learned. Almost every time I got a blank expression.

“Ayur-what, ” they asked? It seemed the people I spoke with, even though they know what Yoga was, had no idea what Ayurveda was.

Being a teacher at heart as well as a health care professional, I really had to ponder how I could share this deep and multifaceted lifestyle program!

After all, the teachings of Ayurveda cover the entire scope of human life, are minimally 5,000 years old and were handed down as an oral tradition through wise sages prior to being written in the ancient language of Sanskrit!

Yes, there needs to be a preliminary introduction!

So here’s what I did…

To elevate the awareness of Ayurveda in my community, I began teaching an introduction to Ayurveda. What I found is that people are ready for a truly transformative experience with their health.

Ayurveda is so reasonable, practical, and, well, it is finally having the answers to what we’re supposed to do to stay healthy.
